Meet the Black African Queens Who Paved the Way for Nonconformist Liturgical Dance Today.

But there's always a solemn bent as we take the time to recognize the sacrifices made to ensure our freedom through gospel dance. Liturgical Dance brings us right there, and we have nothing but gratitude for those who opened the way for our worldwide celebrations.

Celebration of these trailblazers, we're highlighting some of the influential black women in Christian Ministering Arts who came before us and had been changing the game in the gospel-centric dance scene for almost four decades. They continue to thrive and survive.

MEET APOSTLE SABRINA MCKENZIE

Television personality, author, entrepreneur, mogul. And activist. Born in the Bronx, New York, she is best known for the renowned annual conference, The Dancing Preachers International Dance Conference, and the founder of the International Dance Commission, IDC. The organization, founded in 2005, has grown from 40 members to over 3,000 members worldwide and 40 chapters internationally.

And the founder of International Dance Commission, now in its 23rd year and still a powerhouse of performance. The company highlights social issues through movement and music, and gathers communities for annual workshops, including the Summer/Fall/Winter Liturgical Dance Institute. Mckenzie encourages thoughtful young leaders to move, shift, sustain, resist, yield, reimagine, build, remain curious about dance, and build relationships with God.

Her dance and choreograph repertoire include choreography for the Gospel Heritage Conference, Dottie Live, Gospel Dream, which aired on BET, NBA all-star weekend, and the Evander Holyfield heavyweight championship. She recently put on a production for Pastor Jamal Bryant for his television show.

GOSPEL CELEBRITY QUOTE:

"One of God's most anointed ministers of dance, who uses every ounce of her body to glorify GOD. It was a pleasure to have her and the Praise and Worship dancers a part of New Birth to participate in my Church in with Dottie, CD recording and video."

- Dottie Peoples

She is a 2021 Dance Ministry Magazine Award recipient and, in June 2024, will receive the Iconique and Legends Lifetime Achievement Award. So we hope you all enjoy reading, salute Apostle Kenzie, and then have a great time celebrating Sabrina Mckenzie Journey!!!
